The Golden Project is a research-based project in connection with Girl Scout’s Troop 956 which allowed me to garnish the highest level of distinction with the organization. The project is “Our Hearing Hearts,” which made it possible to have interpreters for the deaf at the McAllen Boys & Girls Club for summer programming assisted with field trips, provided educational services, and developed advocacy awareness for deafness and ASL. Through the project the students got a chance to learn various sports from different volunteers like soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. hosted at Brown Middle School. Then at the Boys and Girls Club the students did art’s and crafts, played games, had a pool day, and helped along with the interpreters to teach ASL to those campers interested. Lastly at the end of the summer program we took the students on a field trip to South Padre Island island to visit the Sea Turtle Inc., get a boat tour from UTRGV Coastal Studies, and finish off at Courtyard by Marriott for a pool day with lunch and snacks. In addition to the summer program those students that learned sign language through the program got a chance to participate in the Boys and Girls Club summer musical of Shrek the Musical Jr. to perform to the song What a Wonderful World.
