My name is Julia Martinez and when I was in 3rd Grade I was diagnosed with Absence Seizures which is when there is a brief abnormal electrical activity in one’s brain for a short time. Thankfully, I have been in remission for 7 years. Every year on March 26th the Epilepsy Foundation spreads the word to wear purple in support of those who were diagnosed and those who are currently diagnosed with the different forms of epilepsy. In November 2023 I got the opportunity to join Lily Flowers a Class of 2024 graduate from McAllen High School who is diagnosed with epilepsy for over a decade to raise awareness and money. Both her and her family has been raising money to go towards the Epilepsy Foundation to help others diagnosed. During that time I got the chance to organize a team for the annual epilepsy walk hosted here in the RGV in order to help Lily while she was getting ready for her new journey by touring colleges. With the team we put together we got recognized as the top fundraiser in the RGV at the Walk to End Epilepsy Glow Walk hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas. Here are some pictures from the kickoff event and walk.
